Throughout the banquet, Will couldn’t help imagining the face of each English person present covered with black, poxed boils and lying dead out in the London streets. In a couple of years, many of these people will be stacked corpses if nothing changes. The soldiers, servants, nobles, and especially the people outside the castle. The merchants, the families—and the kids.

Morgan seemed to calculate everyone as he encouraged them to talk. However, as time passed, he deferred discussing plans while the alcohol flowed around him. The king seemed to enjoy himself, but Will also thought that he seemed somewhat guarded throughout the evening and less merry than his men.

Will listened intently to the conversations, but people had stopped talking about anything substantive a while ago and were now leaving the great hall. He wanted to get some fresh air and better process everything that was going on, so he also excused himself. He walked through the castle until he found an isolated stone window peering out into the night sky of the old city. The sound of people in the streets was quieting down, and Will felt a guilty sense of comfort in not being able to see or hear them.

He felt his stomach turn, and he leaned his arms on the window ledge. Was it even possible to go back home now that the king had seen modern guns? But people here are already slowly shifting toward making guns. This isn’t a new idea, and the king doesn’t know how to make these yet.

That might change starting tomorrow. He mulled over the plans he’d overheard about traveling south tomorrow to obtain supplies for making gunpowder and building a smithy for manufacturing at the Tower of London.

Will withdrew the penny from a small leather pouch on his belt. He had looked at it many times when he was alone, as the one thing that tied him to home. He’d thought about discarding it before—it seemed to just make him homesick. The tails-up, old, unlucky penny dated 2006. One year short of a lucky seven. He felt the indentations of Lincoln’s profile on the penny and remembered how the president had helped free people from slavery. What am I going to do about Morgan’s conquest with slavery? What if I let the Dreizack begin their quest for world domination and then wait until they age and die? They
